It's why I take the train to my mom's these days, so i can pack cookies and soda, and not have them dissect my guitar effects. Heck, I can even take along a nail file and polish to do my nails during stops.
Actually, come to think of it, on my way back from Alaska this summer I was talking with the TSA guys at the x-ray about how their are responsible reasons for packing a knife. Little did I know till i got home that I had inadvertantly taken a hearty camping/mechanics utility knife as my flight carry-on.
As a teenager, back in the early airport x-ray days of Patty Hearst which started it all, I was late for my plane and had to take it all as carry-on. My metal CO2 bb-pistol went through x-ray, and I was sweating bullets because the same suitcase also contained a bunch of illegal explosive fireworks I had just smuggled from Mexico.
These events lead me to believe that character judgement counts for more than technical measures in security.
If you think about it, at least here in the US, it's absurd anyhow. They'd save 1000 times more lives by making hand-gun ownership illegal. What makes planes so special?

Reminds me of the time I was in line for a flight, and the TSO was doing its random security checks. There was a sweet 80-something-year-old lady in front of me. She looked like the stereotypical Nice Grandma. And she got searched.
I understand that racial profiling is the buzzword these days, and that a lot of innocuous-looking people turn out to be terrorists, but is it too much to ask that they not search someone who is quite clearly not a threat?

But to come to their side of the argument, who is clearly not a threat? Vietnam soldiers were kids as much as anything else. A kid could have a timed bomb planted on them and not even know while while some innocuous adult is prepared to jump up and deprogram the unwitting kid if demands are met. Grandmas were raised in days of much greater political liberty, and have less to lose, so they are more likely to raise a stink too.

Though ofcourse one must agree no pilot doors are gonna be blown open by nipple rings.

Ah yes, I was concerned about piercings myself. To play devil's advocate again, while they may not be a problem, they could mask other concealed metal. If your genitals were pierced and set off the metal detector and wand, you might in fact have a bomb or gun up your butt (no fantasies, please), and they'd have to x-ray you to be sure, which they are not equipped for, thankfully.

I did hear once about a woman who smuggled a gun into prison by shoving it up her...sensitive area. Hid it for a couple days before she used it, too. >.< I can't imagine that not hurting!

Right, a deringer. While you're at it, smuggle a grenade in your arse.
